Template Letter of Intent
A Letter of Intent can best be described as "babysitter instructions on steroids." While it is not a legally binding document, it plays a critical role in the life and care of a child with disabilities by providing detailed, practical guidance to future caregivers.
It is a document that outlines important day-to-day information, such as: daily routines and schedules, medical history and current treatments, dietary needs and preferences, therapies and appointments, sensory triggers or behavioral concerns, likes and dislikes, communication methods, family relationships and support systems, etc.
In the event of a parent's death or incapacity, the Letter of Intent helps ensure a smooth transition and continuity of care, giving peace of mind that the child's needs, routines, and personality will continue to be understood and respected.
While it is not a legal document, we strongly encourage all of our clients to create one. In fact, if a parent does nothing else in terms of estate planning, we advise that they at least complete a Letter of Intent.
At Byrd Law, we believe parents know their child best, which is why we do not draft Letters of Intent on behalf of our clients. However, we provide a free, easy-to-use template to guide parents and caregivers through the process.

We recommend reviewing and updating the Letter of Intent at least once a year (their birthday is a good reminder), or whenever there are major changes in the child's care, health, or routine. Friends, family, and future caregivers should be made aware of the document's existence and know where to find it in an emergency.
